THE DAY OF THE DEAD

4 min read

The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st, Samhain, the veil between the living world and the spirit world became incredibly thin. This bled into All Hallows' Eve to Halloween and eventually in the Catholic tradition the Day of the Dead when we celebrate our departed. Here in Sicily, they celebrate with Frutta Martorana, little brightly hand-painted marzipan fruits, leaving them out for their departed ancestors. A beautiful way to remember their dead loved ones.

Death has been and still is very much a part of our culture, often feared, sometimes welcomed, and always grieved by those left behind when we lose the ones we love.

“O’ death O’ death! Won’t you spare me over for another year”

The Grim Reaper is a constant companion a shadow that darkens every step of our life with the fear of losing our life, or those we love. With having to live with the heartache the hole that is left when someone or something we love deeply dies.

But very often it is the very thought of death that pushes us towards spirituality. This fear of death motivated the Indian sage Ramana Maharshi to inquire into the true nature of his very essence. Many people who have near-death or out-of-body experiences feel freed from the fear of death. Many people’s grief from losing a loved one prompts them to question the meaning of life. Many feel the presence of those they love still with them even if the body exists no longer. Throughout the centuries, many young men who were sent off to war to witness countless deaths returned deeply changed and many spiritually reborn. Saint Francis was one. So death can be a catalyst to profound inner awakening.

What is Awakening?

True awakening is removing the veil of illusion that has kept us in a dream state. What is this dream? That life is but a dream. This truth is related in all ancient texts and scriptures, the truth that we know in our heart of hearts. There is no death! Because there is no birth. There is no beginning, no end. As the Zen Buddhists say there is no you. You do not have a life; you are life. You are the Infinite experiencing life, so you have nothing to lose. You have no mother, no father, no son, no daughter, no dog, no cat; nothing belongs to you. So how could you ever lose anything? The form you associate with them may change, but nothing is ever lost. How could it be? Even a dog knows that if their favorite bone is covered and out of sight, it is still there.  Or a child, when the mother covers her face behind a veil to play peek-a-boo knows the mother is there. It is simply hidden behind a veil. Those who have managed to "pierce the veil" have this inner knowing.

But we have forgotten because the veil limiting our view has caused us to forget and to identify with the external illusion of form rather than our eternal infinite divinity. We have been living in a death cult that celebrates our attachment to form over infinite consciousness. A culture that promotes the deceptions of fragmentation, separation, and duality over the truth that we are all ONE infinite consciousness manifesting in form to play, enjoy, and express our true infinite nature.

But we became too attached to our creations, to the forms, to our false identities and the masks we wear. Wealth, power, our bodies, the roles we play. So much so that our attachments caused pain when the show was over. When the curtain fell. We stopped living and held onto the past, what we loved, thinking that was all there is no one or no thing would ever take the place of that which we had lost. We forgot that all is infinite consciousness. We forgot our infinite power as conscious creators. That we are infinite creation, created to create what we want to experience. That if something ends, it is to make way for something better! More adapted to what we need now, and that there is only the NOW! So you see there is really nothing to fear, nothing to lose, nothing to grieve! LIFE was always meant to be lived in the moment. Life is to express our divine creativity and to share it with others. To play and enjoy freely, always remembering who we truly are: the eternal Infinite “I”. Divinity expressing itself. LOVE unconditionally giving forth of itself. Truth BEING its True self in the world. It has been written that all misery is caused by attachment. If we know that all we seek is inside of us and that nothing ever dies, how can we remain attached to the external, impermanent, temporary world outside of us?

This may not be easy to digest because we live in a finite culture that worships the external world of illusion: wealth, the physical body,  power over others, immortality…. This is not an easy thing even for me to write, but it is the ultimate and absolute truth, and the only way to true happiness, bliss, and inner peace.

I remember once, after making love, our bodies interlaced, Peter and I lay in the blissful state of ecstasy many lovers experience. Suddenly, a terrifying thought entered my mind, and I blurted it out, “ What if one of us dies?” Peter smiled and looked at me, and said all we need to do is think of me, and I will be there. Not satisfied with the truth I held his body tight, “ but I don’t want to lose this!” Even though I was still attached to his body, I was aware enough to know it was not him. But because of my stubborn attachment, I spent twenty years grieving! And for what? A carbon-based body, not even his true Krystic vehicle!

So as the frequencies rise, know that the veil of illusion is becoming thinner and thinner until its transparency disintegrates. Then only the truth will remain. There is no death, no birth, only LIFE!  So grieve not for those whom you can no longer see with your limited physical eyes; rather, BE with their true Infinite Essence that has never left but was hidden from view!
